Need high Quality recordings
« on: April 10, 2010, 01:42:16 AM »
Are there any high quality recordings? Or does anybody have a suggestion how to record live streams / feeds / broadcasts in high quality? (360 bitrate mp3 of 24 bit wave)
Thanks

Why do you need HQ recordings? I don't think you're going to find any of the feeds streaming in anything higher than 16kbps. 1) its unnecessary 2) if it's any higher it would take up more bandwidth to stream 3) the settings are fixed in stone onces the feed is set up. Dave should be able to explain better than me though.

If you do find a recording or clip in anything higher than 16kbps its probably because it was exported like that. I uploaded a clip a while ago and had it going at 128 or something but that was overkill and didn't make the clip sound any better, just made the file bigger.

Toeknee25's point is correct - It's due to the limitations of AM radio, and you're not going to get the clip, realistically, to sound any better than it does at 16kbps.

I don't know where you could find any recorded in 360kbit MP3 because it's simply so wasteful and makes the filesize bigger for no quality gain. You could record in high quality using the Line-In on your laptop/PC connected to the scanner but the audio quality really won't be any better than the streams you get on LiveATC.

Thanks guys.
I'm a producer for film and games and would like to record some live communications.
Could perhaps someone help me record it with a live-scanner? In stead of the streaming sites.

Thanks

I do not normally post on these boards but as a computer scientist and audio engineer by trade and a pilot by choice I think I may also be able to help.

Assuming you're actually looking for higher quality audio, recording transmissions at a higher bit rate will not increase the quality. As has been stated, the real quality issues show up when the data (ATC audio in this case) is being transmitted via analog radio waves through a noisy medium (the air). Attaching a high quality medium on one end will not change or increase the quality. It would be like attaching a fire hose to your kitchen sink. Pretty pointless.

The only "real" way to get high quality transmissions is cut out the low quality medium. For example: You could fork a pilot's headset as well as a controller's headset directly into two recorders and splice the files together later. Or, for even better quality, you could get a real pilot and a real controller into a studio and record them there.

Even if you had the means to accomplish this, what would all this trouble really give you? Thanks to movies and television most everyone knows what radio transmissions are "supposed" to sound like. High quality radio chatter would sound exactly like what it would be. Fake.

On the other hand, If you're simply looking to change the bit rate to make it compatible with whatever application you're working on this is easy. Find a freeware audio converter and switch the bitrate of one of the files you find on this site.

Finally, I can tell you that the audio you find in the archives on this site is of comparable quality to the audio I hear over my headset when cruising the skies.

If there is anything I can do to help you, feel free to leave me a PM. For example, if you want some audio as if you were in the plane (high quality pilot, low quality ATC) I'm willing plug in a recorder to the copilot headset jack on one of my flights.

Best of luck!

 :-D

If you are looking for full digital ATC- airplane comms, you might as well think of Flightsimulator audio, using a sophisticated flightsim (the one that moves) or a game (FSX)  Also if you want to record a training session from an ATC simulator you can ask Schiphol (LVNL) for some time and goodwill....

I'm sure there are ATC simulators in the USA as well of course... Contact FAA en you might get some help....

thanks, but I need some new original material.
Btw. is there a manuel with aviation radio communication training? For commercial flights and Military/fighter pilot communication. So I can create an original script.

And is anyone interesting joining my production team creating an original live recorded library?
PM me if so

Thanks you guys!

If you mean "manual", I would suggest the Airmen's Information Manual. For all intents and purposes it is the published standard for pilots in terms of communications procedures. (in addition to a ton of other aviation-related info)

This is published by a couple of companies, and often is combined with the Federal Aviation Regulations in a title called "FAR/AIM" or "AIM/FAR". Should be able to get it on Amazon.com as well as in stores like Borders and Barnes&Noble.

What exactly do you mean with the highlighted part?  Seems to me, you try to make a copy of this website and hope for better audio.....

That would have nothing to do with a film then.... :?
