ILS to CAT I Minimums video

Not much to do with ATC but this was a video I made a while back while shooting ILS approach to absolute CAT I minmums. Figured I would share since there are pilots here. Video is a little boring unitl I broke out of the clouds.


Weather at the time 070@10 OVC 200 vis 3/4.  Broke out at about 100 feet above TDZE.  Thank god for approach lights. :-D

Ive recieved some feedback from people telling me that these weather conditions did not meet CAT I mins.  Few people said at least but maybe some people here might have some idea on what these conditions look like.  The weather reported at the time was as I have wrote above.

That doesn't matter. Operating under part 91, you can begin the approach if the wx is reportedas below minimums (unlike the part 121 ops). If you get the some part of the runway environment, you can descend to within 100 feet of the TDZE...which from what you said, you did...completely legal. Nice job.

Yea I realize that, I was talking flight visibility but that I guess would be hard to tell form the vid.

Ok...but either way, you were the PIC, you made the decisions. Nobody can really tell what the exact flight vis was from the video, therefore, they shouldn't tell you that you were illegal.

Just my thoughts,

I do not see how anyone could possible judge flight viz from a low-res you tube video.

Thanks, I know its not the most exciting video but it gives the viewer a good idea from glide slope intercept to breaking out.  It was somewhat scary because this was the first  time I actually had to go missed on  VOR and GPS approaches.

You were legal to fly the approach.  You'd have been legal under 135 or 121 to fly the approach provided the viz requirement is 1/2 mile.

The way you worded your post might lead people to believe you went below mins.  Breaking out 100 ft above the TDZE would have you below mins, and therefore you should have gone missed before you got to that point.

I think you meant to say you had the red siderow or terminating bars in sight at minimums, and then picked up the rest of the runway at 100 ft above TDZE.

I've flown about a bazillion approaches down to CAT I mins, and that's the way it usually happens.  You get the lead in lights, then immediately the red lights you need to keep descending.  By the time you're at 100 ft above the runway, you've got enough in sight to land.

Ohh yea thanks.  Yea that wouldnt be legal if I broke out at 100 feet above TDZE.  I obviously meant to say  I  Saw the lead in lights at about 200 above picked up the runway 100 above.
