'Runway' 18 Right at McKinney National Airport (KTKI)
« on: October 25, 2015, 07:22:19 PM »
On Saturday 17 October the sole runway at KTKI was closed for around 2 hours after a landing aircraft flipped over on to its roof (without injury to the occupant).  During the closure, the pilots of a number of landing and departing aircraft were allowed to use the parallel taxiway at their own risk without ATC clearance, prompting one of them to suggest the taxiway should be redesignated Runway 18 Right.
The attached mp3 file begins just before the accident occurred and contains virtually all transmissions made throughout the 2 hour closure up to a point just after the runway is re-opened (file trimmed to under 1 hour). The exchange in the final 1 minute is taken from a file archived on 21 October and contains the Controller's explanation of how the the accident happened.
I think all the Controllers should be congratulated on the exemplary way they handled what was clearly a very difficult and potentially stressful situation.

"18R" or taxiway Bravo is actually the old runway, so no issue with landing on it. The current 18/36 next to it opened a few years ago to better accommodate corporate jet traffic.
