Mayday - N24145 down on Lake Shore Drive, Chicago
« on: September 23, 2013, 10:06:11 PM »
This past Sunday morning just before 1100Z, a small plane flying near downtown Chicago had engine trouble, and the pilot put it down beautifully on Lake Shore Drive.

Nobody hurt, but two cars struck the airplane after he had come to a stop, and then sped off! Must have been out-of-towners.

Here's his mayday call... it has been edited for time.

Controller remained professional and cool.  Good for him.

Glad this all ended OK.

The former Miegs Field would have been a nice place to land.  Right down the block.  Too bad it was bulldozed

Well, apparently the pilot kept really cool - which is certainly very good for him.

BTW - I heard an audio clip on the ABC radio network news yesterday, and they did not give attribution to the source. I hope it was not LiveATC

That's our beloved former Mayor Daley... I know someone whose airplane was stranded on the field along with several others because the runway was bulldozed while he was parked overnight... It took a week for the FAA to give them special permission to take off using Taxiway A.

Ironically, Daley's reason for bulldozing the airport was to "ensure the safety of the buildings downtown." Yet, prior to the airport being bulldozed anyone flying along the skyline needed to be in contact with Meigs Tower. With the airport gone, the Class D is gone, and now we can fly right by the buildings without talking to a soul. ;)

Only on LSD could a plane land and then a minute later be hit by TWO cars who then sped off. Fairly certain they weren't "out of towners"

The Hit and Run part of the accident is hilarious, i mean the dudes who crashed into the plane must of be thinking that they would have to pay the airplane parts that they damaged, that would probably be the reason of why they fled LOL... bunch of numb nutz.
