HAVELOCK, N.C. (WITN) - The Marine Corps says neither snow or ice were factors when a cargo jumbo jet ran off the end of the runway at Cherry Point.
It happened around 9:30 p.m. Friday, according to Cherry Point.
The National Airlines 747 was carrying cargo when it ran off the end of runway 5R and stopped about 100 feet into the grass, Marines told WITN. The runway is nearly 8200 feet long.
The air station says the jet had a mechanical issue with its braking system.
No one was injured and Cherry Point says there was no damage to the jet or the airfield.
Marines say the jet was repositioned and towed to another area of the airfield for maintenance. The National Transportation Safety Board is not investigating this accident, and attempts to reach National Airlines have not been successful.
correction: Cherry Point originally said the jet was carrying members of the military. An update now says it was a cargo jet.
