Man scales perimeter fence at Heathrow
« on: March 13, 2008, 04:39:04 PM »
An entirely different kind of runway incursion! Clip from BBC News is below:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/7294745.stm

They suspect he was protesting tomorrow's Royal opening of the brand new Terminal 5 by the Queen. I would imagine security will be tightened even further tomorrow but after a similar event last month where protesters of the proposed third runway managed to get on top of a BA 777 I suspect it's putting Heathrow security under a very large microscope.

Hey Scotsman,

I saw in the clip protesters about a third runway , is it still going ahead or what.I know for it to be built the BAA have to demolish a whole village is that right?

As far as I can tell bogman, it's a done deal. The environmental assessment is complete and the bidding war shall begin soon. The worst case scenario is that the village of Sipson could be pretty much demolished if BAA goes ahead with the third runway and the anticipated sixth terminal. Understandably it's getting plenty of people hot under the collar but pandering to local opposition is not the way to ease the burden on London's airports. There is also serious consideration for adding a second runway at Stanstead by 2011 to further reduce congestion.

Regardless of where they put any new runways, or even new airports for that matter, aviation authorities are going to incur the wrath of the environmentalists and local protesters. While I sympathize, what are the options? Would they rather have hundreds more aircraft in holding patterns over the city releasing tonnes more nasty panda-killing dioxides than they would standing at a gate? Increases in air traffic won't go away so tough decisions have to be made.

No kidding... are people so dense that they can't work out in their heads that an extra runway would mean LESS time in the air spewing out carbon dioxide? Jeez people can be wingnuts... Why don't we just give up flying all together (and driving for that matter) and just go back to horses and sailing ships?

I agree with what you are saying. Things will probably get worse in the future. With new airlines popping up and with the OPEN SKIES starting in the end of March there will be major conjestion in the skies and not enough airports.

For example I was reading in a magazine that between Boeing and Airbus there is a backlog of 8000 planes on order.Where will these planes land or takeoff from if airport authorities do not plan for the future and expand.

Even the airlines are finding it difficult to find pilots to fly the planes.Based on the current levels of utilization for both aircraft and pilots,17,000 - 18,000 pilots will be required each year for the next 15 - 20 years. Now that is alot of pilots that have to fly alot of planes to alot of airports that need to expand, but as you said Scotsman the wrath of of enviromentalists and local protestors are not far behind, but if you watch when the runway or teminal is built they will be using it also.

Having said all that it look like the future is bright if someone want to be a commerical pilot. They forcast that India and China will require 3,000 - 4,000 pilots a year, while North America and Europe will require 9,000-10,000 a year.

We'll see what the next few years bring. The economists are predicting doom and gloom for the years to come which will invariably affect commercial air travel, but with the sheer number of retiring pilots alone the future looks pretty rosy for those of us just starting out.

I know Air Canada's regional carrier Jazz just hired a number of low hours pilots right out of aviation college as a method of sourcing new recruits. I also understand that established Jazz F/O's and Captains were not pleased with the plan but with the expected shortage of pilots in the years to come, it will likely become a more common practice. And I'm personally not gonna turn down the chance to hop in the right seat of an RJ or a Dash-8 with only a few hundred hours!

i think the overlords have scrapped the idea of a second runway at Stansted now
