Title: Los Angeles (Whiteman Field) Cessna Crash Today
Post by: medflight5 on December 29, 2013, 05:08:36 PM
Aircraft is Cessna 172 N4936D, a flight training aircraft based on the field. Sounds like a very windy day. Cessna attempted a go-around and crashed just off airport property. Commanche N8672P was #2 for landing at the time. Information received from Fire/EMS personnel is that both passengers aboard the Cessna were able to get themselves out of the aircraft and were transported to the hospital.

Clip is condensed.

Very sad, had several lessons in that plane when I was learning to fly.  Apparently this was a BFR flight, the first instructor turned him down due to the high winds.  They touched down on RNWY30, decided to go around, the wind blew them right towards the tower (which is right next to the runway at Whiteman) It turned into a power on stall and they became vertical, clipped a power line, then landed tail first (which may have saved them)  They crashed abeam the windsock and were showered by water from a broken water line.    Very lucky, and even climbed out on their own.
Very odd and unprofessional to hear the tower assume fatalities over the radio.

"Very odd and unprofessional to hear the tower assume fatalities over the radio."

Not really the controller is in shock, also he stated he assumed.

Which is fine, he not stating fact and is stating using his knowledge that it appears to be an survivable impact.

I think this is acceptable.
