Looking for DAL 2078 11/25/2013 Bird Strike out of SAN Audio
« on: December 03, 2013, 03:36:16 PM »
I tried, promise, for 2 or so hours.

I was a passenger on the flight that sucked up a pterodactyl in the right engine causing the pilot to return to SAN.

Looking for audio to show my kid!

Here is another one.

Would it still be in the KSAN tower?  Long Beach is next closest air field correct?

Here ya go...Sorry but only the KSAN tower feed was available.  The problem occurred after the flight was handed off to SoCal departure and that frequency is currently not covered by LiveAtc.  The attached audio file is only from the tower but it gives you at least some idea of what was going on...

I spoke too soon...it seems the SoCal freqs for KSAN are covered by LiveAtc but as luck would have it, one of the SoCal feeds was locked on the Approach frequency for KSAN; you couldn't hear the departure side - that's the frequency that DAL2078 was on...the other feed with the two frequencies appears to have been down at the time this occurred.  Unfortunately, that sort of thing happens...

Thank you for the help!  At least its something.

I was sitting in row 15 on the A320.  (Right side) The bird strike occurred in the engine on the side of plane I was on.  The sound was incredible.  Then the vibration was terrifying.  The flight attendant came running back as we were barely off the ground and looked out the window.  My comment was "Shut the F'ing engine off because it sound like it is going to explode!"

The pilot was incredibly calm and collected.  He stated he still had control of the plane and the other engine and we were going to "head toward the ocean and take out time".  Full flaps down and ran with one engine back to SAN.

I would love to read the incident report once it available.  (If it available.)

I loaded a youtube video of the plane cheering upon landing.  Google search will turn it up...

No problem.

I can only imagine what that must have sounded like.  In all my years of business travel, I've never experienced any kind of engine issue.

For some reason it looks like the KSAN departure frequency was not being scanned, only the approach frequency was working.  With any luck the provider of that feed will see this and check into why only one of the two frequencies seems to be working.
