Sorry, I might be wrong, but I thought I remembered that as being on purpose to test the strenth of the empenage / tail assembly.....could totally be smoking some good stuff too though.

You are correct that it was a test flight  (actually a certification flight to determine the shortest horizontal distance required for landing). This required a reasonably hard landing, but not THAT hard.

Cocky? How about got slow. This was probably caused by gusting winds. Most likely the airplane was at Vref while the gust was active then it stopped causing the speed to drop below Vref and it falls out of the sky.

Oh yeah it did.  He woulda had a plane full of evil looks.  I probly would have asked the classic, "Did we land or were we shot down?"

Wow, i'd say that's one of the worst landing i've seen. I bet the pilots had to change their pants after that one. At least he got it back under control. lol
