NY Tracon is always fun to fly through. I'd flown with this controller once before, but didn't have it recorded. On my last flight, though, I had saved enough battery/tape to capture the return flight home, including the interaction with the NY approach controller on 127.60 (works Newark satellite arrivals (TEB, MMU, CDW, N07).
He's not at all busy in this clip, but you just know that the guy could handle a bajillion planes in his sleep...he's clearly been doing this for a very long time. My favorite part is when he apologizes to a guy for continually messing up his aircraft type because he remembers a time 25 years ago when that callsign used to be a Jetstar!
More detail is available in the log of my flight from Lincoln Park to Hazleton and back (http://keith.tristesse.com/object/n07_allentown_hazleton.html). (Video is there, too, click the 'KHZL to N07' video link. The attached excerpt was taken from the 2nd video, from the 5min mark onwards).
Dare I say, the Boston John of TRACON? :)

Very nice clip!

Yeah, that guy is the man over in EWR area. I've shared the frequency with him on occasion. He certainly gets into the groove and has fun on the job... at least it sounds like he does on the frequency. :-)
Thanks for posting that, Keith.
Best,
Jason

I was thinking the same thing. He has a nice flow going

Are Tracon controllers more experienced usually due to demand requirements or lack of supervision? I think I have heard quite a few that sound like veterans.
-
the whole workforce is old, you have to remember most of these guys came in just after the strike and are only now starting to retire. Hence the reason for the big hiring push.
I think i saw a statistic somewhere that within 10 years most of the workforce will have less than 5 years of experience on the job.

Having flown into NY metro area for the past 15 years, this is the guy you want on the other end when the weather is on it's ass!
Very smooth and professional.
-
I agree with captray...he's the man I want to hear when it all goes to sh*t. Wonder what he dreams about at night.
-
I've had him a few more times since then:
http://keith.tristesse.com/object/lnc2_sep22.html?videoNum=1 (at the 18 min mark)
I requested his initials on a subsequent flight during a quiet period, and told him he always provides amazing service.

Nice one Keith!

Thank you for the clip!
Audio clips like these are the one's CNN should be reporting on! What a thankless job, and this guy excels at it.

Good news is no news.

Nice video Keith.
From a fellow Brit in the US.

i'll be one of those to say it:
his phaseology is horrible.
and im just jealous...because if i talked like that on freq. i'd be "tape talked" to no end!
-
It's a fair point, and you're not wrong. Truth be told, I haven't had the chance to hear him when it is screamingly busy, so I'm not sure if he goes by the book when the heat's on, but somehow, I doubt it.
I admire him because of his command of the frequency, and his attitude when working with pilots. He does not appear to be a big believer in the .65 though, that's for sure!

He's a very nice guy. He's been at N90 for about 12 years or so but he's been elsewhere also. He (and almost every other N90 controller!!!) sound better than Boston Johnny.
-
What exactly is the take on use of non-standard phraseology at N90? Is everyone given a pass so long as the job gets done, or is it just the old timers that are given carte blanche?

if they are eligable they can do pretty much whatever they want, cause they will just go if QA gives them crap

Does he also work SOCAL Approach? haha, someone on 128.5 around 6 or 7pm kinda sounds like him.

I'll be damned.
