Title: KSNA Plane Crash 11/21
Post by: XTSKid on November 22, 2010, 11:22:42 AM
Hi everyone,

There was a fatal plane crash in Newport Beach last night that departed John Wayne around 5:35-5:45PM Local. I believe that there may be associated audio in the archives, but I currently have no capability to search/edit it out.

If anyone finds anything, post it up.

Thanks

-Steve

EDIT: Plane appears to have been enroute to Torrance from a location in Mexico, and may have been attempting to land at SNA.

I havent gone into the ATC Archives, but I did listen to the Fire Dispatch for Orange county (which includes the audio from the John Wayne crash trucks and Newport Beach Fire Dept.

If you goto the 15:29-15:59 Archive on 11/21 you can pick up the fire response (first report at 16min 30 Sec into the 15:29 Archive)

i listened to the SNA archive. It's pretty sad to listen to. You hear the controller only and hear the conversation go from fairly normal to "souls on board?" and finally "radar contact lost".

Thanks guys. Had a chance to get in the archives and the associated audio is under KSNA 11/22: 0130-0200.

Eventually the Newport Beach police helicopter asks the controller if he has any idea what happened to which the controller simply responds "ran out of fuel".

Was it a retractable gear aircraft? If not, there is your reason!

The 1968 Model Musketeer that ditched had fixed gear. Ditching without nosing over would be all but impossible except under ideal conditions - into the wind, no waves, touchdown right at stall speed with wings level and nose high. (basic law of physics).
The first Musketeers with retractable gear were built in 1969, called Musketeer-R.
