N557RM reports possible landing gear problem to KOXC (Waterbury-Oxford, CT) tower after takeoff and requests return to airport. Controller lands 2 other aircraft, calls out emergency services, and does a visual inspection of '57RM during a low approach to verify gear down prior to her landing.
Silent parts edited out. Total run time about 7:30. From KOXC Feb 7 2009 2030-2100Z.

Really good catch. We don't get many "incidents" up this way. Controller said he had to get the equipment "from downtown", what kind of ARFF do they have up there at Oxford? Airnav didn't have any info, unless I missed it. :?

Thanks. As far as I know, Oxford Volunteer Fire and Ambulance provides emergency services to the airport. Not much of a downtown in Oxford, but the fire station is only 2 or 3 miles away.

I own a 1979 M20K and I suspect the gear indications haven't changed much. This A/C is a 2000 M20R. My mooney has a single gear "unsafe" light meaning it's in transit and a green Gear Down light. Between the seats nearly invisible especially in daylight is a green Gear Down indicator light. Ours has burned out twice and the fuselage bottom panel needs to be removed to chang the bulb.

Sorry to bring back a dead thread, but what kind of response time does a volunteer fire dept such as this one have to this incident? I was a volunteer fireman back in my college days, and we could be really good at 2 minutes or be still responding at 20 minutes...

I think that would depend on the individual fire department.
Don't be confused here. This was not ARFF responding. Sounds like the airport does not have ARFF capability. This is just the local fire department responding to a call.
As for the time frame, that depends on the fire department, time of day, who was at the station, etc. My township is technically volunteer firemen with staff EMTs/Paramedics, but there is always someone at each of the stations at all times.

Oh, I know OXC doesn't have ARFF capability, but I remember somewhere that the standard was water on an A/C fire within 3 minutes for ARFF equipped airports...IIRC.
Now, with a Volunteer department responding, I'd assume that could not be met as easy. Just curious.
