Any idea what the conditions were at the time of landing? Curious what the visibility was & what time of day it was.
Just hard to imagine this happening especially since the taxiway isn't even parallel to the runway they were cleared for -- and even worse if that was indeed an instructor on board (I couldn't tell for sure but it sounded like it may have been, at least towards the end of the recording).
Man, that'd be hard to live down, but am seriously not sure how a mistake like that happens outside of (very) adverse conditions/visibility or similar.
Edit: Airport diagram -->
http://flightaware.com/resources/airport/OAK/APD/AIRPORT+DIAGRAM/pdfI suppose that's not the quietest airspace but am still a bit surprised that the controller didn't notice where they were earlier in the approach, and realize that they weren't even close to being where they'd need to be for a proper approach to 28L or 28R... Definitely not saying it's the controller's fault by any means, just interesting / thinking out loud. Glad it didn't turn into something far more serious.
