Title: KLGB witness to mid-air collision near the Queen Mary

Two aircraft (a 172 and a 310) collided over the waters 5 miles off of the Queen Mary Berth. The KLGB feed caught a 3rd aircraft reporting the incident and trying to mark the position.

Now that I had enough time at home to play with Audacity.  From first call until they shipped everybody off to SoCal.  Upped the volume a bit for the faint calls from Sheriffs AirRescue 8.

I'm likely just not understanding the SoCal airspace correctly, but I'm confused as to why they switched 5ES over to SoCal Departure -- was the accident area not under LGB's control, or was there another reason he was handed off?

1) The accident was 5 miles out to sea abeam the Queen Mary, and the Queen Mary is already right at the edge KLGB's Delta.

2) KLGB still has to deal with its own traffic, and SoCal is much better set up to coordinate multiple aircraft search parties.  On top of that, they've got extra frequencies and can allocate one for the exclusive use of the search effort.
