Is "Air One" the local police department helicopter? Or is that just ARFF?
Air One is the counties Sheriff's Helo. I know they have a hanger at the Deland airport (about 15 miles West of KDAB) and I believe they also have a hanger at KDAB.
On a side note, based on what I heard on the local news radio station the female you heard in the recording was actually the flight instructor.
Also, some news broadcasts mention the Cessna was taking off and trying to return to the field. I believe that is in error. I just drove past the crash site and the Cessna crashed in a very small open area surrounded by trees almost like it just "fell" out of the sky about 100 yards from the departure end of 7R. Sad to say, but if it were an engine problem there really was no where to go, especially at night. I am more inclined to believe it was a departure stall caused by either engine failure OR pilots seat sliding backwards. It looked like fire burned the entire cockpit area forward. Only thing recognizable was the tail and fuselage up to the back window.
Sad evening for single engine planes, less than 2 hours before the KDAB crash, another single engine crashed into a housing development about 40 miles south of KDAB killing 2 on board.
