Title: KBOS ILS 4R - WINNI or WINNI?
Post by: dave on June 02, 2005, 07:34:56 AM
WINNI is the IAF on the KBOS ILS 4R approach..some people call it win-ny and some call it whiney.  This controller describes the history behind that.

Well what do ya know, the FAA has a sense of humor!   :P

That's pretty funny!

**FAKE**Here's my short take on it: WINNI (Pernounced WIN-EE) was readback by a pilot commanding a plane who misread instructions and annoyingly asked "say again???"  After that they called it WINNI (Pernounced Why-nee) since he whinned...

(I just re-visited this thread in connection with a question asked elsewhere.)

Jason, I'm not sure I can agree with you that the explanation given is fake.

In another thread, (http://www.liveatc.net/forums/index.php/topic,1500.0.html (http://www.liveatc.net/forums/index.php/topic,1500.0.html) ) BOS controller Kevin Winn is mentioned prominently. The way controllers like to tease each other, I have no doubt that they're calling it "whiney" just for him...
