The Joker??? say it ain't so!  Hats off to him for an incredible career and for doing his part to make sure that we are as safe as can be when in the air and on the ground.

If you kept the recording going, the captain of DL493 said that the return leg of his trip is his last flight. Crazy to have 2 retirements in one flight..........

ATC: Uh, Delta 493, if you'll indulge me for a moment, after 33 years, 2 months, 4 days, you're about to be the recipient of the last transmission... uh... from me.  I hope you have a great flight today.  The wind is 300 at 11 gusting to 16, runway 22 right shortened cleared for takeoff. 

DL493: Delta 493, thank you, you've done a great job.  We appreciated your diligence and all your hard work over the years.  493 is cleared for a 22 right takeoff, shortened, and I'm honored to be your last guy.

ATC:  Thank you, have a good day.

ATC: Delta 493, contact New York departure good day now

DL493: Delta 493, we're contacting departure.  Let that guy know, uh, my last flight will be Santo Domingo to Atlanta after this flight.  See ya.

ATC: Really!    You take care sir.

Why would this be his last transmission then? Maybe he is leaving the Tower and then he's "retiring" in two years...otherwise I'm confused!

The Joker and Steve are two different people.
