Title: Jet Blue 191 Radio Traffic
Post by: clearblueskies on March 27, 2012, 03:59:04 PM
Anybody get lucky enough to snag the radio traffic from Jet Blue 191, which was diverted to Amarillo. Sounds like the captain had a major mental malfunction and had to be restrained in flight. The news reports that an off duty captain took over up front with the existing FO and landed safely in TX. Looking forward to hearing that traffic!

Someone found it somewhere...  I heard it on the radio on ABC News a few minutes ago and LiveATC.net was cited as their source.

Starts in http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kama/KAMA-Mar-27-2012-1430Z.mp3, the majority is in http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kama/KAMA-Mar-27-2012-1500Z.mp3.

Nothing really interesting, just a bunch of standard transmissions from "JetBlue 191 Emergency" and requesting authorities and medical personnel to meet them at the gate.

I wonder if anyone caught the center transmissions when everything went down initially. Thanks for the post.

Here is most of the traffic.

You got to hand to the 1st officer, locking the Captain out of the cockpit could have been a career limiting move. Had the Captain regained his composure in front of the cabin crew and passengers the 1st officer would be out of a job.

Thanks for the edited tape, Dave.

Really hope this Captain gets all the treatment and attention he needs. Glad this ended well, all things considered.

Hopefully the CVR will back him up on the mental state of the captain.

Guess he told ATC they were making too much noise and turned off the radios. Maybe it's pretty easy to prove.

I saw a news cast earlier about that....they played some audio and gave credit to LiveATC...nice to see that!

It isn't apparent (from my review of what we have) that he told ATC that (too much noise), but it's possible it was missed.  What is apparent is that after departure there was at least one or two missed radio calls and some minor evidence of distraction in the cockpit.  Very tough to infer from what is available, but I wouldn't worry about the FO.  He did the right thing, IMO.

I assume the call for ATC to be quiet was given to ARTCC, possibly to KZKC, judging from the flight path according to http://flightaware.com/live/flight/JBU191/history/20120327/1055Z/KJFK/KAMA . I'll listen around the archives and see if I can hear anything...Any thoughts?

At time 13:50:30 on the KFYV archive you can hear JBU191 talking to ZME enquire about the altitude of another aircraft, then at time 13:52:05 you can hear them get the handoff to ZKC. I don't believe there are any active LiveATC feeds that cover the ZKC and ZAB airspace between this point and what is picked up on the KAMA feed ?

I just listened to 191's departure out of JFK. Something was not right even then with the captain. He never checked in with Departure, and only offered a fumbling apology when asked-Then the F/O took over the radio duties as well as flying duties.....

Hi all. I am logged into my live atc acct via my ipad2 but cannot seem to listen to live atc mp3 files. I get a screen with a > play symbol with a strikeout through it. Am I not able to d/ l mp3 recordings? I do have the Live ATC app for the feeds that works fine.

Do you have the audio to upload by chance?

No, that was what I was afraid of, I didn't see anything

I don't know how to post them here but listen to JFK Ground/TWR between 1100 and 1130z. Then to Departure(135.9) during the same time. Then....124.75  from 1130z to 1200z.  Thanks to all who uploaded the other clips. On the handoff to ZKC, was it the first officer or captain who acknowledged?

Just listened to the KFYV archive(1330-1400z) as previously mentioned...It is indeed still the F/O handling the radios at this point.

I just had a listen to the JFK transmissions for JBU191. I'd post them here except Audacity is giving me those stupid "no such file or directory" error messages when I try to cut and paste the different channels together and I don't have the time tonight to fix it.

To me, nothing sounds out of the ordinary except for missing the initial departure call.

He actually did check in, it was just on the wrong frequency, selected 125.70 by mistake. At 11:27:10 on the "KJFK NY App (ROBER)" archive you can hear him checking on, the controller there hands him off to the correct departure frequency.

Thanks JetScan1! I just listened to the clip-the captain sounds relatively normal...just a bit confused and animated.
