Just heard this recording through another forum.

It is the recording from a VFR pilot that went into IFR conditions and declared an emergency after loss of control.

I believe this is a good reminder to all of us to stay safe at all times and stay on top of our training.

Nice clip.  An interesting public relations move which apparently had little effect.  I hate seeing them get farmed out but the integration of flight service specialists into the ATO is kind of a sore subject with real air traffic controllers.

So, quick question on this, is this integration thing one of the first steps to them privitizing ATC?  Or is just going to for all of the FSS's?

Hey there,

I'm not quite sure what you're asking (if you could clarify I'll try and answer it as best I can).  This clip was way back from last summer at Fort Dodge FSS.  Back then, FSS was still owned and run by the FAA.  Only from last Octoberish on, does Lockheed Martin operate/own FSSs.

Privitized ATC beyond what we already have now at some Class D towers simply won't work in the future of the NAS.  ...nor do I think it will happen.

well i've read quite a few articles about that being proposed (all ATC facilities) being privitized, and i personally didn't think it would be feasible, but like i said i know there's been a debate over it for a while now.  Just looking to see if anyone's heard anything about it.

After reading many articles in AOPA's magazine, IFR, Avweb's bi-weekly email newsletter, and others over this past year, it seems to me that ATC will remain a US-government function that is funded by a "pay per use" fee schedule, rather than the current funding model of aviation fuel taxes and supplemented by the general tax coiffeurs.  

There does not seem to be serious discussion these days of a complete privatization, except that which is already happening to flight service.

The latest thoughts that have come from some of the "higher ups" in FAA management is a desire to contract all towers not directly working air carriers.

There is a school of thought that holds that the recent failure (read:refusal), of the FAA to reach a contract with the controllers, and the subsequent imposed work rules, are all part of the groundwork for the administration to privatize the entire ATC system.
