This is a 6min 28sec edited clip from the Essex Co airport (KCDW), a Class D field in northern NJ.
A Cessna checks in, is given pattern entry instructions, appears to get disoriented, and causes much more frustration than is necessary.
There are many, many lessons in this clip for all pilots:
- the importance of knowing where you are,
- knowing what the controller is expecting you to do,
- if you deviate from the expected instructions (either intentionally, or because you get disoriented) tell the controller as soon as possible, don't wait to get yelled at.
- when asked to report position, reference the airport or a published visual reporting point
- use your callsign in all transmissions
- if a controller is talking to another airplane, don't attempt to answer for that airplane unless you think you can add significant value by doing so
