Title: Il-76 Heavy Take Off Viewed from the Tower
Post by: Panop on February 19, 2008, 10:42:16 AM
Check out this Azal Avia Cargo Ilyushin Il-76 freighter (just) taking off from Canberra, Australia, fully laden for an 11 hour flight on a warm day with no wind and EXACTLY the right amount of runway!  They don't get any closer!  You'll hear the "off air" reaction from inside the Tower!

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=aWtdtuspnoM

A bit of googling revealed that Azal Air Cargo have "only" had one major accident -  another Il-76 that crashed in China in 2004 after a refuelling stop - "Reports indicate the aircraft had extreme difficulty becoming airborne, reaching an altitude of only around 500 feet before crashing into a farm approximately 2 miles from the airport."  Not much learnt from that one I think.  See details at:  http://www.airdisaster.com/cgi-bin/view_details.cgi?date=05182004&reg=4K-AZ27&airline=Azal+Avia+Cargo

I think Illyushin (or however you spell it)  needs to modify it max T/O weight and performance charts unless they just teach the russian pilots to rotate just before they go off the departure end of the runway.

That was a cool vid as well Moto. Sam Chui has a pic over at Airliners.net of an IL-86 or 96 thats like that as well. I'll see if i can dig up a link to it. I do agree as well that a vid section might be pretty cool.

Yea... it's a bitter truth for russian flyers to overload a plane and operate without V1, Vr at all :-(, sometimes it caused a tragedy :?

I agree as I got a lot of my own flying videos from ATC communications grabbed off of here to instrument approaches, flying in IMC startup, shutdown, landings and the like.

ATC ones are

http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3FWfIq3uYI IFR departure out of 2G2

I am N1943L in the above two clips.

Hope others enjoy them and share them with others!

Here is the antithesis of that video clip.

This plane could easily take off within the length of the IL-86!

"Cleared for Smirnoff" haha classic!

And damn! Think the captain forgot about density altitude for a wee bit?  Bet the vodka was pouring out of him on the last few hundred feet of the runway.

It may have been a very hot and humid day. Here's a 747 in the same situation:
