Title: IFR...Hey Peter!
Post by: Greg01 on December 29, 2006, 04:34:08 PM
Peter,

I was out in you neck of the woods today on an IFR XC. 9G3 - KSYR - KELM - 9G3.

I was flying with another good friend and instructor. NOTE: i fly with two instructors because i'm working on getting both my IR and PPL on the same checkride when i turn 17 in March, so i need to fly a lot. Both my instructors are good friends (so i'm not going behind anyone's back). This gentleman happens to be a captain on the 747 for NWA.

As you can tell, we both like to talk on the radio! He called departure on the way out because he was curious about the ASDE radars (interesting discussion) which SYR does not benefit from!

How's this for a little more inflection?  ;)

Here it is...i called in on the last 30 minutes section, but i couldn't get it into the post.

Thanks,
Greg

Hey, Greg!  You are coming along nicely!  Sounds great.

Thanks for including the additional conversation about the ASDE radar.  I wasn't aware that those two radar towers were test towers either.  Learn something new every day.  Too bad Syracuse and Buffalo didn't have ground radar since there are many days, especially in winter, when tower cannot see aircraft ready to depart at the approach end of the runways due to heavy blowing snow.

Be sure you post your checkride experiences here when you pass in March.  I look forward to reading about them and listening to your audio clip.

Another point about SYR:  Local news just reported that the SYR airport will be losing seven controllers (http://tinyurl.com/ycs3ae (http://tinyurl.com/ycs3ae)) by the end of the next year due to retirement.  Man, that's a lot of ATC walking out the door.

Keep up the great work.

I agree..much more interesting than the Ben Stein impersonations from before.  Also pretty easy XC huh??  I-90 the whole way

My guess is that those test radar antennas belong to Lockheed Martin which is only a stone-throw from SYR.  I haven't been home in a while, I know the SYR ASR is there...are there other ASRs being tested there as well or just  ASDE sensors?

Thanks guys!

After listening to myself with the monotonous voice (listened to myself only just recently), i decided it needed to go.

It would be nice to have the ASDE at BUF, but from the tower we can see pretty well, expect when we go into the bases of the clouds! BUF's losing some controllers as well, but i don't think the number is near 7, though.

Davolijj, thanks .

Easy...i wouldn't say that easy. It was an IFR training flight, so when we got on top on the clouds, i put on the hood. So i was navigating from inside the cockpit.

We spent some time on the holding ramp just south of the approach end of 10 (where the F16s do their pre takeoff checks). So we had a face full of the ASDE radar antennae...we thought they were ASR radars as well.

Unintentionally, my CFII insulted SYR (if you listen to the discussion about the ASDE, "I see those at big airports!")

Thanks,
Greg

Greg,
I heard you this morning (Saturday) chatting with the controllers at Buffalo. Was it as slow of a ride into that headwind as he thought it would be?

That would be me!   :-D

I was at the TRACON last night and was talking to a guy, Lou, who said he was going to be in today and that i should stop by. First, i told him i couldn't, but ended up doing so anyway.

Indicating 100 knots at 4000, GS was 55 knots.

At DKK, holding with the nose pointed right into the wind, we throttled back to 60 indicated to see what would happen...GS of 10 knots from the GPS.

Slow ride there, quick ride back. Oh boy was it bumpy!

I would really like to get a tour of the tower someday.  How is that set up at Buffalo, are the TRACON guys in the same building where the actual tower is or are they somewhere else?  I have a relative that works for Delta in L.A. and she got me a tour of the tower at LAX a few years ago....really cool.

TRACON is attached to the tower. The radar room is on the ground floor and the tower is, of course, at the top of the tower.  Sorry it's so quick, i have to go to work!

I have a Archive question....I wanted to download the 30 minute clip of my USAIRWAYS flight into KBUF last Wednesday just to hear what comms went on during our approach. The halfhour clip on 1/3/07 from 11:00pm to 11:30pm only played 15 minutes in winamp not 30 minutes. Anyone run into this before?

Too bad you aren't coming in this afternoon. I'll be there!

Never had that problem. What flight # were you?

I don't remember the flight number, it was a USAir 737-400 from Atlanta. We landed around 11:30pm. The pilot told us the winds in Buffalo were out of the north so I expected runway 5 but we landed on 23. I think our pilot had his north and south confused.

Dan,

I doubt it. If they're using 23 and the wind is out of the north, they'll stay on 23 until the wind becomes more of a factor. Remember, the wind is always variable.

It's not uncommon to see some aircraft depart with a tailwind (such as on 14 with northerly winds).

Listened to the Syracuse feed this morning during the big lake snow blast, great sounding feed you have there. Was that Bonanza able to get out?

Thanks.  However, I still have a background hum in the feed that I cannot seem to eliminate.  As of now the hum is a good indication of whether my streaming audio player dropped the connection or not.  :)

Yep, I took off around 9:15a local time, just before the lake effect band of snow moved south over the airport.  Winds were a-howling, both at SYR and upon landing at BUF with gusts up to 39kts.  Not one of my best landings at BUF as I slammed it on the runway like an F-14 dropping onto a carrier deck right in front of a waiting Southwest B737.  No bent metal, though, and in reality, one would prefer to get down very quickly rather than float above the runway allowing those winds to play around with the aircraft like a cat does with a mouse, or so I tell myself.

Oh, and I did finally get a chance to compliment Buffalo Approach over the air for their fine service.  I need to check your archives to make sure it came out like I had hoped.

EDIT:  Never mind.  Archives are not available for that time frame.  Drat.

Hey, Dan, off topic from this thread, but since I have you here:  I just learned that your Caravan icing clip from last year apparently has been picked up by the FAA and is being circulated around some aviation safety seminar  circles.

I also hang out on the rec.aviation.piloting newsgroup and a regular there stated he received the clip from an FAA contact so he posted your clip to his website of aviation audio and video clips.  I asked him if he could at least credit LiveATC on his site since it was their archives and your work that resulted in the clip.   He said he would do so but as of 2:30p eastern time today, he hasn't done so:

With the landing, welcome to my world!  ;)

Dan, did you get any snow? We got absolutely pounded in OP. Example: my dad and i snowblowed at 1PM yesterday. My uncle came to pick us up in his Tahoe to go to his daughter's party (my cousin) because none of our streets were plowed and we only have cars (no 4Wheel drive). He took us there and then back home. The main problems were: not being able to see 5 feet in front of us until we got to Southwestern BLVD. Then, when we got back home, we just snowblowed three hours ago, my uncle was literally plowing down our street (the snow was up to the grill on his truck). When we got out of the truck in our driveway, the snow was up past my knees (I'm 5'8"). Back out with the snowblower.

Today the stupid plow blocked our driveway. I spent more than an hour outside trying to clear enough space to get my Mom's Accord in our driveway!

I'm done for today...hoping schools will be closed tomorrow!

Peter,
Sorry I missed your "F-14 like" arrival into Buffalo yesterday. The Buffalo feed was down for part of the weekend, not sure why my computer locked up but its ok now. Thats probably why that archive was missing that you were looking for.
So the FAA might have listened to that clip, I wonder if they contacted the pilot and spoke with her about the incident. I also wondered who the controller was that night, he probably has vivid memories of it happening like me. Its so different when you hear it happen live like I did that night.
As far as snow in Lockport, we only got about 5 or 6" Saturday night when that lake band shifted north then back south. I was able to go for a nice snowmobile ride on Sunday before the Superbowl though!

 Dan

Oh, thanks for the top 10 audio clip nomination.

Listening right now. I don't recognize the voice (either of them). I knew there were a couple of guys who left prior to my arrival, so this may be one of them.

Sorry,

A great picture of a beautiful aircraft.   Nice job, Dan.   You ought to send that one into Airliners.net.

Where is this beauty based?

I think he keeps it at Batavia, he also has a jet. I got a shot of that but he was much higher so it isnt quite as clear.

Was that you doing a few patterns at KIAG this morning (SAT) around 11:00am? If it was, your radio sounded fine to me!

Yep, we were doing a lot of partial panel and approaches. I was flying with an former Navy pilot (F-16s) and we were practicing emergency ILS approaches. This was the training he was taught and later taught while he was in the navy. The scenario was: You've had your head up your butt and you're now low on fuel. There are no VFR conditions for 500 miles and everywhere within forever is below ILS minimums. So, you're going to practice shooting an approach and landing blind. He said he wouldn't let me ruin the airplane. As we get closer to the flare point, if things weren't going as planned, he would tell me i'm "visual" and i can look up and land, or he would take over and land in the flare. We did that and he didn't even have to touch the controls. He thought i was cheating (peeking through the foggles), which i wasn't. So we did it again at BUF (23) and i greased another as he watched me like a hawk! We were rolling out and i asked, "Am i visual?" He laughed the whole way home (9G3). Boy that was fun.

Thanks,
Greg

PS i liked the "welcome back" from the IAG controller.  ;)

I've been in the Tower/TRACON at Travis AFB before, the controllers there are great, helped out alot. And this one lady in TRACON I will never forget, she was training a newbie, and was so nice and helpful with my questions.

Damn, seven retiries?  Starting to wish that NY was one of my five picks then.  Anyone have any good news about CA, TX, FL, GA, or HI gerarding  new retires.  Im CTI complete in Dec and hope to get a call since Ive racked up the bills. Plus if anyone has contacts in any of these states please let me know.

@ davolijj,

The ASDE installations were done by Sensis Corporation which has its headquarters in Syracuse. Here is a little blurb on the installation http://www.sensis.com/docs/162/

If you drive by the towers you can see their name on one of the buildings adjacent to the tower structures. I call on Sensis and it's usually interesting stuff going on in their facilities.

Another Syracuse based company heavily involved in airport lighting equipment is Jaquith http://www.jaquith.com/  There is a good chance that the airport you are flying into or out of has their runway and/or taxiway lights.

Cheers,

JW

Keith, now I'm having a brain fart. I'm pretty sure that's right. I know, someone is going to say the Navy didn't have F16s. Next time I see him I'll ask.

Thanks for the info JW.  I had no idea about those companies being in SYR, and I lived there for 25 years!!
