Title: JBU-446 - one lightningstrike is not enough...

Now the crew of Jetblue 446 is trying out a new haircut, after beeing hit by lightning twice...

I combined the approach, final approach and tower in this clip....

I understand the bad weather conditions, but why would being hit by lightning ruffle the pilots so much?  I thought it wasn't a big deal on modern aircraft.

As far as I know every hit by lightning causes damage, in this case the emergency started when they observed smoke or smell of smoke in the cockpit... and they wanted to get out of this weather of course

Lightning strikes can do a lot of damage to an aircraft...sometimes it is harmless and passes through the airplane, leaving no major damage...other times it causes major damage.

The first three pics below are an example of major airframe damage from a lightning strike. ASA Canadair CRJ-200ER N830AS.

The fourth is an example of minor damage, leaving only a burn mark.

No problem.  I just got interested in the photos and did some searching because it was suprising to me to see that kind of damage from the lighting strike against aluminum.  I have had the unfriendly experience of being in a plane that got hit once.  No matter how much you tell yourself the planes are built for it, the engineers plan for it, the pilots train for it, I still held my breath when the lights flashed out and listened for the engines to be running.

Hmm I don't think pilots train for it, because it scares the h*** out of them too (a human factor) but they are told what to do in such case.. and from experiences of their colleagues...
