HAL22 Returns to Honolulu with Engine Fuel Leak
« on: February 12, 2025, 02:25:28 UTC »
On February 9, HAL22 had just departed off of Honolulu's runway 8R when the tower advised the flight crew of "significant amount of exhaust coming out of the left side".  The crew decided to return to Honolulu because a fuel leak was suspected.  They landed safely about 13 minutes later.  The aircraft taxied off of the runway and stopped so that emergency crews could have a look.  They confirmed that there was a fuel leak coming out of the number 1 engine.  The crew shut down both engines on the taxiway and also opted not to start the APU to avoid any possibility of igniting the fuel that was leaking onto the ground.  After several minutes of back and forth conversation between the emergency crew and the flight crew, it was eventually decided to deplane the passengers on the taxiway.  The emergency crews had suggested several times to keep the passengers on the plane while the flight crew wanted to deplane the passengers believing it was far better for them to be off the airplane in case the fuel ignited.  Shuttle buses eventually arrived to take the passengers back to the terminal.
