PORTLAND (Maine) – A small plane with two people aboard crashed at the Portland International Jetport, a spokeswoman for the city said.
An eyewitness said the plane crashed just after taking off and rescue workers told her that both people onboard were dead.
The plane crashed about 3:30 p.m. near the intersection of Foden Road and Western Avenue, which is just a short distance from the airport, said Nicole Clegg, Portland's spokeswoman.
Courtney Lowe, who works at the Dunkin' Donuts across the street from the Jetport, said the plane seemed to be at an unusally low altitude after taking off. She saw it bank to the left and went back inside the store, where a few seconds later people rushed in saying a plane had crashed.
Drivers are being urged to avoid Western Avenue, she said, and emergency vehicles are en route, as are officials from the Federal Aviation Authority,
