Title: Flying with only one wing
Post by: Hollis on November 01, 2008, 01:28:00 PM
A startling picture. But with an ending that's hard to believe. The guy actually made a perfectly normal landing with this!

Here is the youtube video of it. My Careers in Aviation professor showed us the video in class yesterday.

Some think it is fake, some think it is real. Either way it is pretty amazing!

A guy at work called me and asked me to come down to his office immediately. He was really wound up about something. Once I got down there, he showed me this video. I was immediately suspicious as the video kept going in and out of focus. The airplane looked and behaved as an R/C plane would, too.

My buddy couldn't believe I thought it was fake. I told him that airplanes with one wing go only one direction: DOWN

Fly Safe,
Pete

Here's an undoctored one wing RC recovery video.

If you think about it aerodynamically it is impossible unless the aircraft is extremely over powered and have a fuselage producing an ungodly amount of lift.

1) Its spinning the wrong direction! If you watch the direction the aircraft is spinning it contradicts basic aerodynamic theory. How is a wing that no longer exists producing lift while the one that is still attached is stalled?

2) In order to produce the same amount of lift while missing a wing his approach speed would have to be more than doubled. If you watch his landing roll is VERY short. Also in order to maintain level flight he would have to have a severe amount of rudder deflection it appears there is none (:47).

3) If a wing is ripped off in flight not only would the metal look torn and jaggered but there would be stuff coming out of the wing i.e. fuel, control cables, light wiring etc(:53). It looks like they just took off a wing the way it was designed to be taken off.

However it has been done before.

Good CGI - except for the unrealistic bounce on landing - but the voice acting is absolutely awful.

If this were real it'd be running on a loop on CNN 24/7.  ;)

I must be smarter than most people. How could anyone think this is real?

It's half real, half fake. Just look at the wings before and after...after it has a logo.

Actually it's all real. The flying part is an RC model. The taxi and park bit is a real aircraft. Someone stitched the two seperate videos together as a joke.

That is incredible!! I'm guessing there was just enough Newtonian lift to compensate.

We need a test? Did anyone really think this was real?
