Was perusing a local TV station website when I ran across this news item (http://www.9wsyr.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=189C05AE-F2FE-4110-8680-F01912758B7C) about an incident that occurred Wednesday (yesterday):
"Emergency Vehicles Respond To Bathroom Fire Onboard US Airways Plane"
Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse police and fire crews were called to Hancock International Airport Wednesday afternoon after a fire was reported onboard incoming US Air Flight 3404.
The fire was reported about five minutes prior to the plane’s landing at Hancock.
Using the time, date, and flight number from the article, I searched FlightAware.com to come up with the actual flight log and times, then located the specific SYR archive with the activity.
The aircraft was a Republic Airlines Embraer ERJ-175 flying under the US Airways name, similar to this ERJ-175 here:

Here is the flight track:

The clip combines approach and tower/ground communications.

I'm betting someone was smoking :)

I'm betting someone was smoking :)
Nah, everyone knows that smoking in the aircraft lavatories is illegal. ;-)
It was probably the end result of some very spicy chicken wings.

Peter,
I think your fire beats my ice up problem, exciting day on the air yesterday!

Fire and ice on the same day. Interesting and coincidental contrast of emergencies.
IMO, the icing clip contained more suspense and tension.

That's an error on flight aware. RPA runs E170's not E175's. First time I have ever seen something wrong on that site.

Haha Ed your 100% correct, good catch.

KSYR-pjr,

Thanks for the correction. On second glance at the flight log, I see that FlightAware lists the type in parenthesis as an E170, but the text, which is what I used to determine the type, states 175.

I stopped up at my FBO at the SYR airport to say hello today and got the story of this incident from an involved source.
The story is that an as-yet-unidentified passenger was indeed smoking in the rear lavatory. This loser, who couldn't even wait the 45 minutes from Reagan National (Washington, DC) to Syracuse, just had to light up. He or she then discarded the butt in the waste receptacle, which was filled with paper towels and tissues. Within minutes (but long enough for the anonymous smoker to return to his or her seat), the waste can went up in a quick, but high flame.
The source went on to say that the Syracuse Police and (IIRC) the FBI were called in to take the names of everyone on the flight and a big investigation is ongoing. This is being treated as a pretty serious crime, as it should be, and evidence such as fingerprints in the lavatory was collected.
Apparently the lavatory smoke detector, which appeared to be free of tampering, never went off until the fire broke out.
Here's hoping the police quickly apprehend the person that put all those passengers' and crew's lives at stake.
