Emergency vehicles at JFK???
« on: May 15, 2007, 10:22:43 PM »
Anybody hear this too? Just tuned in and heard an American airlines flight #2 to land and Emergency vehicles standing by. Time: 10:20 P.M. EST. Anyone know what's going on?

Edit: Something to do with a fuel emergency.

Did he (the controller) at the end say there was another emergency, same type, directly behind him?

What's the deal

Sometimes, when the weather is bad or for whatever reason, planes have to circle for a long time and start to run low on fuel. So, they reach a point at which they must land or run out of gas and thats when they have to declare an emergency to get priority landing handling. From what I've heard at JFK, its not too uncommon for them to string several in a row after a long hold for wind/weather.

But as a 121 pilot (or any pilot for that matter) it's your job to prevent that situation from happening.  If you get low on fuel, you divert and gas up somewhere that you can get into.

it's not always that easy, especially in the busy skies of jfk. Plus customer really don't like being diverted after holding in bad weather for possibly hours. I hate to say this but most of the travailing public likes to get were they are going regardless of their safety. Most people are very ignorant of how the airline industry works.
