Title: EGPH recording
Post by: disco87 on July 10, 2011, 07:34:21 AM
Anyone got any Edinburgh recordings they could put up, I've listened to the older ones but i'm looking for some newer ones.

Listening to ATC in the UK is illegal.

Only if it's a live stream, and you're not properly licenced. Who knows, this guy might hold a Flight Crew Licence....

It's illegal to listen to it if it's live. As far as I know, listening to a recording is okay.
I posted quite a few recordings a year or so ago, I think these are probably the ones you are refering to. I've moved away from the area, but I'll try and get over and get an hour or so of audio while the weather's nice if there's any demand!

Just been through my posts and here are all the Edinburgh audio clips I've posted over the years if you haven't already heard them. I'll try and get some new ones up soon!

The third link's a bit messed up, but if you copy and paste you'll get it :)

So, listening live is illegal, but if you record it as it's happening (and don't listen at the time) and play it back later, that makes it ok?  :?  Forgive me, I don't understand...

Trust me, neither do we. It's an archaic old law, and nobody has ever been prosecuted for listening to atc comms.
Even airport police turn a blind eye to enthusiasts at the airport listening with scanners.
However, feeding it is slightly different. If you stream it to a website such as this one, you are likely to hear a knock on your door from OFCOM telling you to cease and desist. However, recordings posted after the event seem to be OK. I've posted a couple, as have others, and have never had any problems.

Wow - that's nuts!  So how long does it have to be delayed before it's not "live" any more?  Could someone "record" the live feed and then feed the recording to LiveATC without violating the law?

Not sure the ins and outs of the law...but as far as I'm aware, you can listen to recordings of UK ATC legally. However, the actual recording of ATC transmissions may be illegal in itself, unless you have permission from the appropriate authority. And if a reording is in the public domain then what can the government do....
