Dual landing clearance for two aircraft at LAX?
« on: June 11, 2010, 11:51:54 PM »
I never heard of a landing clearance like this before... supposed to be some sort of formation flight. Can anyone elaborate on this?

Yes, that is a formation flight, you can hear the controller say that they are unable to authorize landings to formation flights on the same runway, and advises him to expect one aircraft to land on the left and the other on the right, that is why clears the formation flight to both runways at the same time.

Cannot give a formation flight clearance to land on the same runway?  That certainly is a new one to me.  I was under the impression that legally, a formation is to be treated as 1 aircraft.

I don't see how this makes sense to clear one flight to land on two runways.  A formation can only be in one place at a time.  Shouldn't the formation have separated for recovery, and individual clearances given to the individual planes?

Not necessarily true, you can a have have a nonstandard formation.
