AAL17 Engine Issue at KJFK 010416
« on: January 05, 2016, 07:49:06 PM »
American Airlines flight 17 from KJFK to KSFO was on takeoff roll when it suffered an apparent compressor stall after V1.  Aircraft continued the takeoff as the Captain declared an emergency and returned to KJFK about 12 minutes later.

Audio edited for time and relevant transmissions.  Unfortunately the ground frequency traffic is of poor quality.

looking at the track log from Flight Aware, I'd say they were having some trouble climbing.

I don't know what the aircraft's landing weight would have been but it was a scheduled cross country flight so I'm fairly confident it would have had an almost full fuel load on board.  That being said, and not knowing the accuracy of the Flight Aware track log, with the wind being what it was, it seems they got a little slow on approach considering they were down to one engine.

All in all probably just another day at JFK but you could definitely hear the tower controllers voice get a bit elevated after they declared the emergency.  Good job done by everyone involved.

Good catch. On the other tower frequency, sounded like a mixup with FLG3199 while AAL17 was downwind, he checked in on the visual to 31L, got cleared to land 31R, read back cleared to land 31R, continued the approach to 31L. Not sure but it sounded like tower noticed the mistake and, with AAL17 extending downwind, decided it would be safe to allow FLG to continue for 31L, recleared him to land 31L ahead of AAL.

Many thanks for the clip.

I think JFK personnel are to be congratulated on the way this incident was handled. So, although I agree the quality of quite a lot of the ground frequency communications isn't that brilliant, I think they are worth listening too. This audio clip includes most, if not all the transmissions.
