Ramp collision at SFO, United vs SkyWest, 13-Jan-2008
« on: January 14, 2008, 02:33:40 AM »
The San Francisco Chronicle reports that a little after 7.30pm local time, a United 757 being towed to an overnight hangover collided with SkyWest 6398, a regional jet waiting to depart for Boise, ID with 60 pax and crew on board.  No wing walkers were present.  The attached Chronicle photo by Katy Raddatz shows significant damage to the 757's tail.

The initial report appears about 3 minutes into this archive.

Remarkable coincidence number 241:  almost the exact same thing happened to me in a Safeway parking lot 20 miles south of SFO last week.  I'm convinced that reversing SUVs should have wing walkers...

My guess is that the rudder plane is made of reinforced plastic... lighter and stronger than aluminium. But anyway, most of those "parking accidents" are avoidable and cause significant damage.

Is anyone else able to find any mention in the clip?  I hear what sounds like the rescue trucks on the scene, but I don't hear the initial report.

What I'm wondering is how that damage was inflicted. I mean, how does an RJ take a chunk out of a 757's tail like that?  :|

Jump up and bite!  :-D

Seriously, the 757 was pushed back... judging from the damage, its tail must have hit the RJ's tail.
