Here's a quick clip for you Buffalo, NY, guys. I was flying home tonight when, soon after contacting my home airport's approach control, a commuter aircraft checked in and commented that the captain could see Buffalo and Ontario from their position (pretty incredible of them considering they were east of Syracuse looking directly west over 120 nautical miles into a setting sun). The controller then made a joke about not wanting to go to Buffalo that elicited a too-enthusiastic agreement from the pilot.
I know it was rather unprofessional but befitting the on-air mood at that moment I had to say something quick in Buffalo's defense.
Clip is a bit over a minute and has been edited to remove dead air and non-essential communications. Beginning check-in is there to establish the scene.

I love his response to your "I go there every week"
You can see him blushing now!
-
was saying sorry because the pilot said he had to go there every week. Seems like a innocent little jab, nothing too destructive

Good job sticking up for Buffalo, its actually quite nice here. (even though i'm in Lockport) Do you think they could really see that far? Must have been a super clear evening.

The reality is that all of the cities of NY, with the exception of NY City, are not what I would call "glamor cities." US cities like San Diego, Las Vegas, Miami, Los Angeles, NY City, and Atlanta are some of the cities I would label as such. Instead, we up here are old, manufacturing cities that are having a trying time of reinventing themselves since the big employers have all moved out. Sadly, there has been a negative growth rate, at least in Syracuse, over the last ten years with more people leaving that arriving, due in part to a lack of opportunity and high taxes.
I am confident that if it were a Buffalo controller and a pilot checking in with Buffalo, the same conversation could have occurred with Syracuse as the butt of the joke.

It was a CAVU day yesterday and you should have been up flying! I am guessing that they could see that far away as it wasn't as hazy as the summer experiences. I was able to spot SYR from at least 50nm out.

That's hilarious!
Buffalo people are good people...we can take that kind of stuff!

Sorry - Clear Above, Visibility Unlimited

Just googled it and found this: Ceiling And Visibility Unlimited. Now on the other hand i hear alot of pilots use a term when they are in the clouds and have no visiblity. Its a 3 letter abbreviation....cant think of it right now. Been trying to figure that one out for a while now....anyone?

IMC - Instrument meteorological conditions, or no forward visibility at all.

Looks like I garbled both known definitions:

Dan, I would be happy to take you up for an aerial tour of Niagara Falls sometime over the summer but it would have to be a nice weather Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday evening, the days I am in Buffalo.
Drop me a PM sometime.
