I've flown that plane a bunch (did my first solo in it, in fact).  The transponder is a little wonky.  Tower is always calling and telling whoever is flying it that they're squawking 1100 instead of 1200.  It's no surprise that this would eventually happen.

Maybe they'll fix the thing now.

Must have been a sight for other planes.  Seeing a Cessna Escorted by a Sheriff Helicopter, on approach, while on the Helicopters left side other planes landing as well.  Good piloting skills.... What phone number did he give out, local FAA office?

Most likely a FSDO. (Flight Standards District Office)

I wonder when, exactly, he found time to call that number.  The cops had him hooked up as soon as he got out of the airplane from what I saw.
