1 fatality in a C172 crash this afternoon in Bartlett, iL. Pilot reported rudder trouble after coming back to DPA from a touch and go at Schaumburg airport. Callsign N62681
Audio has garbled ground comms at the start at DPA where the flight originated. Pilot did at least 2 T/G's at DPA and then headed to Schaumburg. On the return, checked in and reported a rudder issue. Never declared an emergency.
Audio also contains radio traffic after the crash of the headache that 4 news choppers and a traffic plane can cause when circling an incident just outside of the tower airspace.

Strange recording. Calm, collected pilot in relatively good conditions, rudder problem that he himself did not consider serious then a complete loss of control. I saw the crash site photos, it appears a pretty steep flight into terrain... RIP.

Very sad. May have been a severed control cable. We'll see.

Looking at the photos, full deflection of the rudder. Most of the tail section is intact, so not sure how much of the positioning is due to the impact or from a control cable failure.
