Does anyone know if the controller in the original post is still working at JFK?

There was a nice little documentary made a few years back, primarily about New York Approach (N90).  It included working conditions, controller-controller relations, and looks into some controllers' lifestyles.

If I remember correctly, the documentary's name was "Pushing Tin"
I didn't get to see that doc but I know the one guy in it used to go home & stare at his fish tank, right? He's still a bit of a dullard.

I liked the tower guy at LGA the best. Really seemed on top of things.

About 2 minutes into the "Inside Air Traffic Control" video they feature a clip of a man with a moustache talking about the complexities of ATC.  That's Paul Renaldi the Vice President of NATCA.

I think this is the news article he's talking about... nonetheless, a neat article!

You mean to tell me that you, an air traffic controller, has never seen Pushing Tin?  Wow, that surprises me.

Glad to see that I'm not the only one that found the guy who goes home and stares at his fish tank was a bit odd.

After a rough day of flying, I like to come home and sit in front of the TV and stare and gaze into the TV for hours.......and then I'll turn it on.

I probably didn't have the channel at the time. I've seen snippets of it. And yes, that guy's a bit of an odd duck.

Thats pretty funny considering I also thought of you as one hell of an odd duck since the first day you arrived from Cleveland center.

It might be a bit off topic, but is a "near miss" a glancing impact, or a full blown collision?

In the doc Near Miss, the controller working in the KEWR tower is Glenn Doffy who bought his kid to work a few years ago at KJFK

I just happened to have the full 45min documentary on one of my old CD's that I used for backups back in those days.  I've uploaded it to my Dropbox, the link is here --->

Please don't stream it from the internetz, just right-click and download. The file is about 82mb.

There's some amazing stuff in there. Yer man at LGA is pretty cool, Dave Schoen in the tower at JFK seems unfazed by lost traffic going the wrong way. Towards the runway. In the fog. At JFK.

There's some great shots of the NY TRACON, not to mention some scary Newark stories from a man whose name I don't recall but who spends a lot of time in front of fish tanks following a near-miss.  And then there's Glenn, being very fidgety over at Newark talking to the camera while in the background a man in a very 80's jacket desperately tries to get his attention back to the 5000 planes that are waiting for takeoff by waving a pencil in his face. Classic stuff so it is.

Enjoy!

No problem.

Is Glenn working again? And what about the other ATC'ers featured - are they still around?

Thanks for the upload.

I wonder what the controllers of today would have to say if they went back to remake this today? Which things changed and what is the same?
