So this was a fun night at Kennedy, 3/1/07 around 2300Z. Our favorite entertainer Arnie was manning the 13L and 22 arrivals while a second tower controller was handling arrivals and departures on 13R (hence the cut off radio traffic in this shortened clip).
Right when things got busiest and the second controller advised 13R departures of a traffic jam, a waiting aircraft reports a popping sound and smoke after Delta 412 lands on 13R nearby. The result? => "It's gonna be another one of those nights guys..."
I left some of Arnie in the beginning as introductory material to show you the busy-ness and also because...well, you'll see.
Oh, and at the very end of the clip, after the problem is resolved, somebody chimes in with a perfectly understandable question...see if u can catch it.
P.S.: my first audio post
-
Good Stuff. Congratulations on your first audio post.
It's nice to hear true professionals doing a great job and having some fun too.
Must admit I have some sympathy for international crews trying to understand the rapid-fire instructions from KJFK ATC. I thought it was funny about the first controller's comments he didn't understand a particular pilot's transmission because I could hardly understand what the controller was saying.
-
"Is this New York"? I caught that at the end. Great clip!
Thanks for sharing!
-
Thanks, really like that one too, especially the end. Hilarious.
He could as well have asked "Arnie, are you ok?"
-
hey check out this picture I found. NYC departure and arrival aircraft movement. You can see that they were using the Canarsie approachs 13 L/R to JFK and from each airport you can see the different departures used in aircraft sequencing (the clearance issued climb) for entrail restrictions.
-
I think that just like it has been done for the Boston Tower for John and Charlie, there should be a tribute to Arnie at JFK because he is just too much. Never fails to make me laugh.
-
Does anyone have another recording of this clip? For some reason, it is not working for me. Thanks
-
Wow Great clip!
-
this is a really good clip!!!
and he is so calm about it !!
"It's gonna be another one of those nights guys..."
-
Very good catch!!! This has got to be the clip of the year. All great examples of teamwork... Not to mention that Bravo clearance by Arnie was NUTS!
-
yea that clearance at the beginning of the clip has gotta be one of my favorite moments from him.
-
This one should play for those of us who couldn't listen to the original:
-
I must say that I try to stick to prescribed phraseology and use a callsign to begin a transmission, but... that was hysterical. He did a good job.

Did anyone actually understand what he said.
I'm not from NYC (thought I'm from BUF), and i don't hear fast talking controllers often. However, if you really hunker down, even on the first time, you can understand everything! Amazing what listening does! ;)

Ya gotta fly down here to experience it for yourself. Try listening to Kennedy TCA on a busy day, it's absolutely incredible to listen to.
-
I have heard Kennedy on a busy day. You need to be on the ball!
Fun times,
Greg

Wow. I am totally new to this game and i have listened to a couple of these transmissions and some live stuff..... How quickly does this guy talk? Does he come up for breath??
-
does anyone else think that Arnie's partner in the tower sounds like Alan Alda?
-
Mmmmm, naw, his voice is slightly deeper, I watched 11 seasons of M*A*S*H and he sounds a bit different.
-
First post....great site!
If I didn't know Howard Stern was busy with his XM radio gig, I could swear it was him.
-
I was hoping the clip would be longer because I was hoping the controller took the opportunity to tell the Quebec line, "Gentlemen, start your engines!" LOL after his little 'jack it up, get 4 fresh tires and a coat for the driver in 14 sec" comment :-D
-
haha trust me...if he had said that, it would have been included. They kind of all figured out when they should startup and the controller changed shortly after the runway opened up again so no go with the start your engines.
Imagine standing near Quebec if they were all to simultaneously turn on their engines, though...can only dream
-
"I did not understand a word you said there, sir"
Nice one Arnie!
-
To an unsuspecting pilot...the same could be said to him at the beginning of the clip.

The controller who gives that chopper the amazingly fast bravo clearance...anybody know when and what position he's working these days?
I hear him on clearance once in a while but I never enjoyed JFK ground and tower as when he worked it all the time.
someones gotta know
-
Is there a Kennedy TCA feed here?
-
That was really hard to understand. It sounds like he was squeezing out ever last word while running out of breath. But thne again those helicopters operate in and out of the kennedy Class B airspace on a regular basis so they know what they are listening for as they have heard it alot before.
-
hey guys,
Having some trouble listening to this clip on my ipod. I click it, and it goes to the next song. Do I need to change something in the type of file? Could someone else try it so I know i'm not the only one having this problem.
thanks

does anyone have or can make the mp3 version of this?

12th post is an mp3 version (reply # 11)

thx

athaker - that picture of the NY airspace you posted, what kind of time elapse would that represent. 2 - 3 hours?

That's a good question. The Port Authority Website didn't have any further information, as this picture was probably meant to freak out politicians about crowded airspace more than anything.
From the number of departures off the 13's at JFK (blue lines), I'd estimate about 40ish, which, if I'm not mistaken, and checking out flightaware, is somewhere near the max departures per hour at busy times. But then there's the ridiculous number of arrivals at Newark so yea, if I had to guess, 1-2 hours or somewhere in there for that picture.
-
Yea, I counted the JFK departures like you did. Newark arrival is ridiculous. thanks for the reply :-)
-
I love this controller. Great clip.

Hello, everyone!
Was listening hundreds of times to this part but still can't make it out. Can someone help, please? It happened at 7.10
- Tower - 99
- 99-Tower
- Ok all units in _arm??____ are clear of the RW in Mike. All debris's been picked up and RW 13 Right__???___ this time
- Ok, thanks, 99. Good job
Thank you in advance
-
Ok all units and I'm clear of the RW in Mike. All debris's been picked up and RW 13 Right(sounds like resobs)resumes this time
The thick brooklyn accent makes it hard to comprehend. Notice when he first calls up the tower he says "I'm at pauper delter"
But you really go me thinking because i've listened to it a hundred times as well and didn't really notice it
-
To Kaktak1
Thank you very much. With the speed and accent they are speaking I would never make it out without your help. Thanks a lot! I just wonder how they (and you!!) manage to understand each other in view of all distortations and back noise! Just awesome!
-
I wouldn't stress too much about what he says, because if I remember correctly, some of his traffic might have been covered by the other tower frequency, since both are streamed on the same scanner.
"Roger I thawt I heard somethin awlso from my awffice"

Way that sounds to me is, "Ok all units in, um, clear of the RW in Mike. All debris's been picked up and RW 13 Right RESOPS as of this time."
I presume RESOPS would mean "resume ops" with a long "e" (REESOPS).
All guesswork...

Thats exactly what I was thinking when I listened to it.
-
"Boogity Boogity Boogity" :-D
-
"Boogity Boogity Boogity" :-D
Wow, that was a heck of a bump
-
Definitely a monumental bump, but a good one - Hadn't heard this clip in ages, had forgotten all about it and enjoyed hearing it again.
-
That's gotta be one of the best clips of all time. It's awesome to see the controller having some fun during a time when planes (presumably) weren't able to get in or out.
I love the efficiency of the comms....it doesn't sound like it could've been handled any better, by either the pilots or the controllers.

Great catch by the Shamrock pilot and well handled by the controller and airport crew. I like the remark about having the Delta flight's mechanic jack him up, replace all four tires, refuel, and have a Coke for the driver - all in 14 seconds.
Talk about busy though...aircraft lined up on taxiways with engines shut down. Another day in paradise...
Thanks for posting the clip!

Yes he does. I saw a news clip a while back that had recent video of the tower JFK cab and there was a tall guy with white hair about shoulder length that sounded just like this guy working opposite Arnie. If it is the same one, he even looks like Alan Alda!
-
sounds like the same guy that had the bad day at ground day
