That was really hard to understand.  It sounds like he was squeezing out ever last word while running out of breath.  But thne again those helicopters operate in and out of the kennedy Class B airspace on a regular basis so they know what they are listening for as they have heard it alot before.

hey guys,

Having some trouble listening to this clip on my ipod.  I click it, and it goes to the next song.  Do I need to change something in the type of file?  Could someone else try it so I know i'm not the only one having this problem.

thanks

athaker - that picture of the NY airspace you posted, what kind of time elapse would that represent.  2 - 3 hours?

That's a good question.  The Port Authority Website didn't have any further information, as this picture was probably meant to freak out politicians about crowded airspace more than anything.

From the number of departures off the 13's at JFK (blue lines), I'd estimate about 40ish, which, if I'm not mistaken, and checking out flightaware, is somewhere near the max departures per hour at busy times.  But then there's the ridiculous number of arrivals at Newark so yea, if I had to guess, 1-2 hours or somewhere in there for that picture.

Yea, I counted the JFK departures like you did.  Newark arrival is ridiculous. thanks for the reply  :-)

Ok all units and I'm  clear of the RW in Mike. All debris's been picked up and RW 13  Right(sounds like resobs)resumes this time

The thick brooklyn accent makes it hard to comprehend.  Notice when he first calls up the tower he says "I'm at pauper delter"

But you really go me thinking because i've listened to it a hundred times as well and didn't really notice it

To Kaktak1

Thank you very much. With the speed and accent they are speaking I would never make it out without your help. Thanks a lot! I just wonder how they (and you!!) manage to understand each other in view of all distortations and back noise! Just awesome!

I wouldn't stress too much about what he says, because if I remember correctly, some of his traffic might have been covered by the other tower frequency, since both are streamed on the same scanner.

Way that sounds to me is, "Ok all units in, um, clear of the RW in Mike. All debris's been picked up and RW 13  Right RESOPS as of this time."

I presume RESOPS would mean "resume ops" with a long "e" (REESOPS).

All guesswork...

Definitely a monumental bump, but a good one - Hadn't heard this clip in ages, had forgotten all about it and enjoyed hearing it again.

That's gotta be one of the best clips of all time.  It's awesome to see the controller having some fun during a time when planes (presumably) weren't able to get in or out.

I love the efficiency of the comms....it doesn't sound like it could've been handled any better, by either the pilots or the controllers.

Great catch by the Shamrock pilot and well handled by the controller and airport crew.  I like the remark about having the Delta flight's mechanic jack him up, replace all four tires, refuel, and have a Coke for the driver - all in 14 seconds.

Talk about busy though...aircraft lined up on taxiways with engines shut down.  Another day in paradise...

Thanks for posting the clip!

Yes he does. I saw a news clip a while back that had recent video of the tower JFK cab and there was a tall guy with white hair about shoulder length that sounded just like this guy working opposite Arnie. If it is the same one, he even looks like Alan Alda!
