DAL 2019 emergency at JFK 04/22
« on: April 25, 2012, 09:53:56 PM »
Emergency of Delta flight 2019 from LaGuardia to Minneapolis - via Kennedy
Talk about a bad day at the office...
DAL2019 climbing out of LGA diverts to JFK due to burning smell in the rear of the A/C. First attempt at an emergency landing on JFK's 4L ends with a go-around and a "slightly" pi..-off captain. The second time being successful  (and Kennedy's firebrigade luckily unable to find any sources of heat with their infrared camera), they have to take the "scenic route" from the vicinity around twy G for a LL entry. Since this "doesn't seem to be their day", they miss the LL entry and get stuck in the departure line of rwy 4L.

This clip features most (I missed the company channels once again) available sources cut together in chronological order. Silence and non relevant comm deleted.
Sequence: LGA TWR -> JFK APP (ROBER) -> JFK APP (CAMRN) -> JFK TWR -> JFK DEP -> JFK APP (CAMRN) -> JFK TWR -> JFK GND

Scenic route probably because A and B are gridlock when on 4s and 31LKE.

Except we stopped 31L departures to expedite the flight's arrival. Unfortunately, the flight didn't descend fast enough & that's why it went around.

The whole thing went very well in spite of the ground crew trying to chat up the pilot about oxygen masks as the plane was descending to the runway. My question: did the ground crew really have a legitimate need to know, or was the ground crew's adrenaline clouding some conversational judgment?

Heard the end of the emergency as it happened when I was listening to JFK, and was unable to find the audio in the LGA archives.  Thanks for putting this together!!
