Title: ATC audio with captions?
Post by: daewoogao on February 04, 2015, 04:04:33 PM
Hi, everyone
Newbie to aviation, student pilot. I am nervous talking  to tower every time and did miss info (can't imagine if my CFI was not with me)
Just wondering if anyone know where to find ATC audio with captions? Does liveATC has this function that could turn on captions? Or some other resource?

Thanks! Hope everyone has a good fly! Next fly is always a better one!

LiveATC does not provide this feature, but you can find many, many videos on youtube of ATC (with the source usually being LiveATC) with captions.

Setup a tour of your local air traffic control tower, talk to some of the controllers in person. Read up on some of the ATC phraseology, it's all based on a defined list of phrases. Most importantly: never be afraid to ask tower to repeat or explain what they mean!

Hi, geoffeg,
Thanks for your great advice, they are all down-to-the-earth ways to learn how to understand and talk to ATC. Especially the last one  8-) 8-) 8-)

With the clarity of most feeds, combined with the rapid rate of ATC and awkward phrases, it would be an extremely difficult thing for software to decipher - pretty much impossible. The majority of YouTube videos have many mistakes because the transcribers are not pilots or controllers and do not understand what they're hearing.

ATC2lyfe and swa4678,
I was thinking real time voice recognize and translation would be a good app, and datalink to your phone/pad just with your tail number...it is extremely hard.

Thanks for the suggestions, great ones! I think I will have to just work hard and harder on my ATC communication skills. :)

It's been awhile since I was flying, but is it still OK to add the phrase "Student pilot"
to the initial contact with ATC? That let's them know your a newbie, and usually gets
a slower delivery of the clearance, and helps them help you.

I don't know if it helps, but also actually not suitable for this website could be:

Some are only transcriptions and some have audio....

As mentioned before, there might be many mistakes in deciphering the audio and so not all transcripts are 100% correct....
