Where in the archive is it?

Isn't it nice how the media continues to hype things?  Look at the URL for the news article.

Thanks dude.

According to the news, this was a crash.  I'd have to say that it is one of the most gentle air crashes I've ever seen.

As is demonstrated here, mostly by the calmness in the pilot's voice, an engine failure isn't necessarily an urgent situation, even for a B772.  Basically, just get rid of the weight can come back in to land.  The aircraft is completely controllable, and in this case I'm sure the auto-rudder of the 777 helped out quite a bit.

Nice edit!  :-D

Too early to know for sure, but sounds like a compressor stall to me...

According to the video, there was no visable damage to the powerplant, so that would make a birdstrike unlikely...but then agin...it is too early to tell for sure...

Aye, from the witness descriptions it really sounds like compressor stall.  Here's a good example of what the witnesses probably saw:

Well, that would go along exactly with the part in the witness report that said "There was flames shooting out of the left engine, bursts of flame not a constant stream, and then small explosions."

Very interesting. Thanks for the clips. I read this on Airliners.net this morning. I couldn't wait to get home to download (this site is blocked at my job :-( )
