Title: Antique plane crashes at KROC

Hi, first post here...

A vintage 1947 de Haviland jet crashed at KROC on Saturday, on return to the airport due to engine failure shortly after takeoff. He landed short of runway 4 with no fatality. Here's the clip (sorry for the WAV; my computer no longer makes mp3s). Call sign 78D (didn't catch the full tail number) is the one in trouble although there's a cryptic bit at the beginning with 2146G "if it needs to come back to the field..."

After the incident there is a brief full closure of the airport, although runway 7 reopens almost immediately.

It seems like a hectic day all around, with lots more GA traffic (that's rw 7) than I'd have thought normal, general confusion on who's where, lots of flights requesting a return to the field (is that unusual?) and a spate of sticky mics.

Finally, at the very beginning of the archive feed there's a warning of an area of rocket launches about 10m in diameter. What's that about?

It's a de Haviland Vampire. I'm just going to make this request now before anything gets started, but this is a personal request: please avoid any speculation. Stick to the facts. I can tell you this, the pilot did a damn good job.

Thanks for posting the clip. From what i heard the Pilot did a great job landing this jet and is lucky to be alive. Ive actually seen this jet a few years ago and if i remember correctly its made out of wood.
