ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) - No injuries have been reported after an airliner went off a runway at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport Wednesday night, according to airport officials.

United Flight 4339 was arriving from Dulles International Airport shortly before 10 p.m. The jet ended up on the engineered materials arresting system (EMAS), which is a bed of engineered materials designed to minimize damage in the event of a plane going off the runway.

Roanoke-Blacksburg Airport and City of Roanoke Public Safety teams responded to the incident at the end of runway 16-34, according to the airport.

The EMAS was installed at the airport in 2024; this is the first time it was used.

The airport reported a “resource center is available for passengers and families on the second floor of the ROA Terminal staffed by the airline and Airport.”
