SFO Tower "DO NOT BACK UP! TRAFFIC DEPARTING THE RUNWAY!"
« on: August 10, 2010, 04:05:36 UTC »
A French Air Force Transall C-160 arrived at SFO this evening as CTM3021.  He was moving a little too slow for tower who was trying to squeeze out departures between the arrivals.

The Transal C-160 is a twin turbo prop military transport similar to the C130 Hercules.  They can put the engines in reverse and taxi backwards.

Does the engine actually reverse direction, or do the props feather a different way?

The reversing is done with the pitch of the propellors which is referred to as Beta mode on turboprop aircraft.
