An Air France Airbus A340-300, registration F-GLZI performing flight AF-321 from Boston,MA (USA) to Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) with 125 people on board, had just switched to Boston Departure about one minute after takeoff from runway 15R, when the crew declared Mayday and reported a number 4 engine fire (outer right hand engine CFM56). The crew shut the engine down, managed to extinguish the fire indication, dumped fuel and returned to Boston, where the airplane landed safely on runway 04R about 25 minutes after takeoff, stopped on the runway for a quick check by fire engines and taxied to the gate requesting emergency vehicles to remain on standby at the gate due to hot brakes.

At that late hour Boston Approach usually switches to Boston Departure (ID, Initial Departure, Sector).
-
Tower and Departure mixed. If the file's too big, I'll slice it some more.

Tower and Departure included in mix. If the file's too big, I'll slice it some more.
Awesome, thanks!

Great catch, thanks for sharing!

Nice work!

is the wiggling flight path on landing because of the lost engine?
Thank you for the post!

The GPS data is inaccurate.
You can see the original *.kml file in text form if you open up the attached file in notepad.
You can use this data to create your own kml file with a kml editor. You would have to massage the data to tidy up the output.

Ah ok, thought it was a bit odd : ) Thank you.

Nice catch! Great audio!
Side note:
I hear the callsign "United 828 Tango" mentioned several times, is this maybe a training flight?
-
I don't think that that's a training flight! They may have many flight with the same flight number. So they need to put letters in to distinguish between the others.
-
United 828 operates CYVR-KORD-KBOS...just checked United's website...it arrived in KBOS at 1:44am, 1 hr & 24 mins late. So this was not a training flight...just a late one! On this day, United 828 was a B737-300 from KORD to KBOS. An A319 was used on the first segment from CYVR to KORD.

Still unsure about the "Tango" suffix on the callsign...not that it really matters...just curious...
-
If "tango" was added to the callsign usually that means that a flight with one aircraft using a callsign is late and the same flight number is departing with another aircraft, so atc will change the callsign by adding an alphanumeric digit to the end of the callsign to differentiate between the two callsigns and avoid confusion.

That makes total sense to me...except UAL 828 terminates in KBOS. It does not continue on...

Air France plane makes emergency landing in Boston
(AP) – 1 day ago
BOSTON — An Air France flight out of Boston heading to Paris returned to make an early morning emergency landing 31 minutes after taking off.
Phil Orlandella, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Port Authority, said Wednesday that Flight 321 left Logan International Airport with 125 people on board at 1:16 a.m. Wednesday. Shortly afterward, a warning light flashed for one of its engines.
Orlandella said pilots shut down the engine and returned to the airport. The Airbus 340 landed back at Logan at 1:47 a.m. No injuries were reported.
Air France spokeswoman Karen Gillo said there was no engine fire.
Passengers were booked hotel rooms for the night and scheduled to leave to Paris on another flight later Wednesday.

Is it normal to say "mayday" at the end of the callsign each time?

I was wondering that too.. bit odd. :)

same here, perhaps a standard ICAO procedure to distinguish the callsign since the frequency wasn't made exclusive to the mayday call?
-
It's a normal ICAO and europeen procedure to prefix the call sign with the PAN or MD to make sure that any aircraft who's checking in will be aware of the prevailing situation and make sure as well that any ATC involved will be aware in case of a frequency change even though changing the freq during an emergency is not usual.
Here's another example of a mayday with this Thomson flight where the crew pefix their call sign with the mayday key word.

Thanks for the info flaps as I was also confused by the Mayday suffix attached to the Air France callsign.
Nice audio snag!!

Good grief! I hope there are no environmentalists on this board angered over the fuel dump. :-D
