Title: AAL953 Mayday Call
Post by: RonR on November 11, 2015, 11:16:28 AM

On November 10, 2015, AAL 953 enroute to Buenos Aires declares an emergency shortly after departure from KJFK.  The flight returned to KJFK and performed an overweight landing.  The flight crew stated that the problem had to do with the radome; something had come loose and was banging against the aircraft.  The flight landed safely without incident.

It's interesting to note that NY Tracon activated their final approach frequency (132.4) just for AAL 953...it was otherwise not in use at the time.

Did the controller laugh after asking if AA was doing a overweight landing? :-o

No!  That little giggle was from her talking with another aircraft right before that.  I had edited that part out.

Sounded extremely professional to me the entire time.

We'll need to level at 12000 for a few minutes, possibly some delay vectors

Delay vectors would mean some maneuvering to give them time to run checklists and get set up for the return to the field

ARFF is a well known term, probably the controller just didn't hear it clearly the first time

It is ARFF, not AFRR.  It stands for Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting
