AA 1706 (LAX-LAS) - "That was fun!"
« on: April 23, 2011, 06:22:08 PM »
AA 1706 (LAX-LAS) cleared by the tower to depart 25R (today approx. 2:20pm).  It's a little unclear, but it sounds like while AA 1706 was thundering down the runway, tower called to tell them about a helicopter to their right.  It was a little too close for comfort.

Radar tracks are available at this link:

http://www331.webtrak-lochard.com/webtrak/lax4

Uncheck the "LIVE" box and start the replay at 04/23/2011 14:17.

You'll see the helicopter (no callsign) operating on the West end of the field at about 1400 ft making a turn that takes it from the end of 24L to the end of 25R.

I can see why AAL1706 must have thought at one point that he would climb right into the helicopter.

That is an interesting website, though I don't watch US airports so much.

Leaves me with a question about the TCAS altitudes which I referred to in the SFO topic.

TCAS doesn't work below 1000 feet, at 1100 feet it says adjust vertical speed and at 15oo feet it gives the resolution advisories.

What if the helicopter would be at 900 feet and AA at 1100 feet, would it then go off?
