SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Details are emerging about what could have been a serious incident at San Francisco International Airport last Friday night when an Air Canada plane from Toronto nearly landed on the taxiway.

The flight was cleared to land, but it appears the pilot was confused and nearly landed on the taxiway instead of one of the two runways.

The FAA is now investigating the incident.

It's not the go-around that's shocking... It's that Air Canada was about to land on the taxiway where 4 other planes (loaded planes) were taxiing. United 001 (a 787-9 with 280 souls, and 30,000 gallons of fuel) was the only one who radioed about it and he didn't sound too happy.

I love that people on hackernews think this is something that has never happened before.

A Go-Around at an airport, ...wow!

You might want to check the facts before you think they are out of control.  According to the radar data, the plane was less then 100 feet from ground and already over other planes on the taxi way before it started gaining altitude.  One the planes was a 787, 50' tall.  So the Air Canada plane was within about 50' of striking a fully loaded plane on a taxi way with 3 planes sitting on it.  They didn't go around until one of the pilots on the taxiway commented "hey it looks like they are lined up with the taxiway"

Unfathomable. Whether it's a visual or an instrument approach, day or night, how could you mistake the taxiway for the runway? This was at almost midnight. So the runway lights, approach lights, centerline lights, threshold lights and SFLs aren't noticeable? This guy is positively dangerous.

If the 28L lights were turned off and they were expecting to see two parallel runways, then it's possible they saw the lights of 28R and twy C and believed them to be the lights of 28L and 28R.
