4 Dec: Emirates A380 Low Altitude Alert at KJFK
« on: December 14, 2017, 05:34:52 PM »
An Emirates A380 was flying the Parkway Visual Approach to Runway 13L when the controller noticed the flight being extremely low. The controller alerted the crew several times. There was no response when the controller asked, if they had the runway in sight.
According to AvHerald the A380 eventually descended to 200ft at a distance of 2.5nm to the runway, before deciding to go around.

you mean afl102?

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/su102#fdc759b

according to ads-b data all seems normal.
consider the altitudes on fr24 are not pressure compensated.

typical level off before ASALT and beginning of approach is 3000ft, i could check with atc recordings if this was the case but i'm rather sure.
on the flight history level off altitude is around 2700ft meaning readings are 300ft low.

so the leveloff at 450 ft is actually around 800ft which is exactly how the procedure should work.

On

AFL102 checks on at about 15:00 for VOR13L and exits at DB at 20:00

didn't hear any low altitude alert.

would you specify which flight you are referring to?

AFL122 https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/su122#fdd1f83

why don't you say so in the beginning :)

their track on http://webtrak5.bksv.com/panynj4 (New York Port Authority tracking for noise complaints) is even nicer than emirates going to 292ft MSL but they level off and land.

I've heard so many low altitude alerts for 13L i should have a look at the webtrak more often :)

if anyone wants to hear the russians not really respond to the low altitude alert because they are busy it's at 19:52 in this bit of the archive
http://archive-server.liveatc.net/kjfk/KJFK-Twr-Dec-18-2017-0330Z.mp3

that means Dec 17 10:49 PM local time for the webtrak linked above

if anyone wants to check the emirates on the webtrak it's Dec 04 08:25 PM

you can just put the time into webtrak but using the slider first seems to work better.

this is the approach plate for anyone interested:
http://flightaware.com/resources/airport/JFK/IAP/VOR+OR+GPS+RWY+13L_R/pdf

seems they should have some instructions to level off at 800 ft and continue descent once PAPIs are insight or sth

i would love to see real radar data from the FAA, with the webtrak you can't really be sure how accurate it is.
i wonder if one is just getting looked at more closely than the other or they are actually significantly different regarding flightpath.
