A Skybolt with a freshly overhauled engine developed an oil leak and loss of engine power at Punta Gorda, Florida. The tower reported that he was also trailing some smoke. The pilot determined that he was not going to make the airport and decided to land in a field. The plane caught fire but the pilot got out with minor injuries.
